Join Monzo's 24-month Graduate Engineering programme to build scalable backend systems in a high-growth environment. Gain exposure through rotational placements, receive dedicated mentorship, and contribute to the future of digital banking with a competitive salary and comprehensive support package.

About the Company & Graduate Programme

Monzo is revolutionising the banking landscape by putting the customer at the heart of everything we do. Since our inception, we have challenged the status quo of traditional high-street banking, growing from a disruptive startup into a household name that serves millions of users across the UK. Our culture is built on transparency, radical autonomy, and the relentless pursuit of solving complex financial problems through innovative technology. By joining our team, you will become part of a fast-paced, inclusive environment that values your unique perspective and contribution from day one.

Our Graduate Programme is pivotal to Monzo’s long-term strategy as we scale our infrastructure to support our expanding global footprint. We invest heavily in the next generation of engineering talent, ensuring you gain exposure to high-availability systems, microservices architecture, and cutting-edge financial technology. As a graduate hire, you will not just be watching from the sidelines; you will be shipping code that influences the financial lives of millions, helping us maintain our position as a leader in the digital banking sector while evolving our backend capabilities for the future.

What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional product squads to design, build, and deploy robust microservices in Go.
  • Engage in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), from initial architectural discovery to final deployment and monitoring.
  • Participate in daily stand-ups, peer code reviews, and technical design sprints to ensure high-quality, scalable output.
  • Contribute to our distributed systems, focusing on performance, reliability, and security within a high-traffic production environment.
  • Engage with senior engineering stakeholders to discuss infrastructure improvements and long-term technical debt reduction strategies.
  • Learn to leverage modern cloud-native tools and containerisation technologies such as Kubernetes and AWS.
  • Contribute to our internal tooling to improve developer productivity and operational efficiency across the engineering department.
  • Mentor peers and participate in knowledge-sharing sessions to foster a culture of collective learning and continuous improvement.

Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility

  • You are in your final year of study or have recently graduated with a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a highly quantitative discipline.
  • You hold or are on track to achieve a 2:1 or higher (or equivalent international qualification) in your undergraduate studies.
  • You demonstrate a genuine passion for distributed systems, backend infrastructure, and building products that solve real-world user problems.
  • You possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills, capable of dissecting complex technical problems into manageable tasks.
  • You are a team player who thrives in collaborative environments, valuing open communication and diverse perspectives.
  • We support visa sponsorship for candidates who have the right to work in the UK via the Graduate Route or similar paths.
  • Previous internship or project experience in a programming language (Go, Java, Python, or similar) is highly desirable but not mandatory.

Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship

Our 24-month structured graduate programme is designed to provide you with breadth and depth in your technical career. You will rotate through three distinct engineering teams, allowing you to explore different areas of our architecture, from payments and card processing to customer lending and backend platform reliability. Each rotation is six months long, providing you with ample time to embed yourself within the team, own significant project features, and understand the unique challenges faced by our backend infrastructure.

Beyond technical rotations, we provide a holistic support structure to ensure your career growth. You will be paired with a senior engineer mentor who will guide your professional development, provide career coaching, and help you navigate the Monzo landscape. Additionally, you will be assigned a graduate buddy—someone who has recently completed the programme—to help you settle into the culture. We also offer formal training budgets for professional certifications, including AWS Cloud Practitioner and other relevant technical accreditations.
