Join our 24-month Graduate Backend Engineering scheme at Monzo to work on high-scale distributed systems. You'll gain hands-on experience through rotations, mentorship, and a generous learning budget in a fast-paced fintech environment.

About the Company & Graduate Programme

Monzo is revolutionising the banking industry by building a bank that works for everyone. Since our inception, we have disrupted the traditional UK financial landscape through a mobile-first approach, radical transparency, and an unwavering commitment to our customers. Our engineering culture is built on the pillars of ownership, autonomy, and rapid iteration. As a digital-native organisation, we operate at a scale that challenges conventional infrastructure, processing millions of transactions daily with high reliability and security.

Our Graduate Programme is designed to transition high-potential talent into seasoned engineers capable of navigating complex distributed systems. We believe that early-career engineers bring fresh perspectives and critical thinking that drive innovation. Throughout this programme, you will not be treated as a junior observer; you will be an integrated member of our product squads, shipping code to production from your first month. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about solving hard problems at scale and who resonate with our mission to make money work for everyone.

What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain robust backend services using Go (Golang) within a microservices architecture.
  • Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, from initial design and implementation to testing and deployment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional squads, including Product Managers, Designers, and Data Scientists, to deliver impactful product features.
  • Write clean, testable, and maintainable code, participating in peer code reviews to ensure high engineering standards.
  • Engage with cloud infrastructure (AWS) and Kubernetes to monitor, scale, and secure our core banking systems.
  • Optimise system performance and reliability by troubleshooting production issues and participating in on-call rotations with senior support.
  • Contribute to internal tooling and engineering processes to improve developer productivity across the organisation.

Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility

  • Degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or any STEM discipline with significant coding experience.
  • Minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (predicted or achieved) from an accredited university.
  • A strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and at least one object-oriented or functional programming language.
  • Demonstrable curiosity about distributed systems, API design, and cloud-native architecture.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong collaborative mindset; you should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, feedback-heavy, and agile environment.
  • Must hold the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme (we provide full visa sponsorship for exceptional international candidates).

Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship

Our 24-month structured graduate programme is designed to provide breadth and depth. You will undertake three 8-month rotations across different domains such as Payments, Lending, Core Banking, and Financial Crime. Each rotation is tailored to your developmental needs, ensuring you gain a comprehensive understanding of the Monzo ecosystem while allowing you to focus on an area of technical interest. You will be assigned a technical mentor—typically a Senior or Staff Engineer—who will guide your professional development and help navigate career progression.

We place a significant emphasis on formal learning and growth. In addition to technical training, you will have access to a generous personal learning budget to attend industry conferences, take certification exams (such as AWS Solutions Architect), or purchase resources. We also host internal 'engineering brown bags' and workshops where you can deep-dive into system design with world-class industry experts, ensuring you graduate from the scheme with both technical mastery and soft-skill leadership capabilities.

Salary, Bonus & Benefits Package

  • Competitive base salary of £42,000 per annum.
  • Annual performance-based bonus scheme linked to individual and company milestones.
  • Generous pension scheme with employer match up to 7%.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, plus a 'work from anywhere' policy for up to 4 weeks per year.
  • Private medical insurance and comprehensive mental health support through our wellness platform.
  • Monthly hybrid working allowance to cover home office equipment and connectivity costs.
  • Relocation assistance provided for candidates moving to London from outside the region.
