About the Company & Graduate Programme
Monzo is not just a bank; it is a technology company built to make money work for everyone. Since our inception, we have fundamentally redefined the UK banking landscape, moving away from archaic legacy systems to a cloud-native, microservices-based architecture that serves millions of customers. Our culture is defined by transparency, radical autonomy, and the 'get stuff done' mentality that has propelled us to the forefront of the global fintech revolution. We operate in an environment where your work has immediate, tangible impacts on the financial lives of our users.
Our Graduate Engineering Programme is designed to identify and nurture the next generation of technical leaders. As a Graduate Backend Engineer, you are not merely a resource; you are a pivotal member of a cross-functional squad. We believe that early-career talent brings fresh perspectives that challenge our status quo. By joining this cohort, you will work on mission-critical features, scale our infrastructure, and contribute to the evolution of a product that is continuously setting new standards for digital financial services in the UK and beyond.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities

- Engage in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to maintain our high engineering standards and share domain knowledge.
- Work with distributed systems, databases (Cassandra, Postgres), and message brokers (Kafka) to solve complex real-time financial data problems.
- Participate in on-call rotations to maintain platform reliability, gaining invaluable experience in incident response and site reliability engineering.
- Build and maintain infrastructure on AWS, leveraging containerisation technologies like Kubernetes to ensure seamless deployments.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders and principal engineers to influence technical architecture decisions for upcoming product cycles.
- Contribute to open-source initiatives and internal engineering blogs to represent Monzo’s technical vision.

- Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
