About the Company & Graduate Programme
Monzo is on a mission to make money work for everyone. Founded in 2015, we are one of the UK’s leading digital challenger banks, serving over 9 million personal and business customers. Our technology platform is built from the ground up on microservices, processing billions of pounds in transactions every month with industry-leading reliability and security. Driven by transparency, inclusion, and engineering excellence, Monzo continues to transform the fintech landscape while scaling rapidly across global markets.
Our Graduate Engineering Programme is designed to launch the careers of the next generation of software engineers. From day one, you will be embedded within cross-functional product and infrastructure teams, shipping production code that directly impacts millions of user lives. At Monzo, graduates aren't given sandboxed side projects; you will work on mission-critical banking systems, backed by a culture that values autonomy, continuous learning, and rapid deployment.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities
- Write high-performance, clean, and maintainable backend code primarily in Go, supporting our architecture of over 2,800 microservices.
- Participate in end-to-end software development lifecycle, from technical design and code reviews to automated testing, deployment, and monitoring.
- Collaborate with product managers, product designers, data scientists, and security engineers to build seamless customer-facing financial features.
- Contribute to infrastructure resiliency initiatives, optimizing database queries (Cassandra, PostgreSQL) and event-driven architecture (Kafka, AWS).
- Respond to system events and learn operational best practices by working alongside senior engineers on platform scalability and observability.
- Present technical proposals and feature demos to senior engineering stakeholders and cross-functional working groups.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and implement algorithmic improvements to maintain ultra-low latency transaction processing.
- Champion developer productivity by automating internal tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure deployment scripts.
Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility
- A strong academic background with a 2:1 or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related STEM discipline.
- Proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language such as Go, Python, Java, C++, or Rust.
- Solid foundational understanding of object-oriented/functional programming, data structures, algorithms, and system design concepts.
- Demonstrated passion for technology and software engineering through personal projects, hackathons, open-source contributions, or industrial internships.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities with an analytical mindset capable of debugging complex asynchronous systems.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to solving difficult technical challenges in an agile team environment.
- Right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme (Full UK Visa Sponsorship provided for successful applicants where required).
Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship
Our 20-month engineering programme is structured to give you broad exposure across our technology organization. You will complete two 10-month rotations across core domain areas such as Payments, Security & Fraud, Core Banking Platform, or Financial Crime. Each placement provides tailored learning objectives, enabling you to build deep expertise in high-concurrency microservice architectures, fault-tolerant systems, and cloud infrastructure management.
To ensure your success, you will be paired with a dedicated Senior Engineering Mentor and an operational Buddy from day one. In addition to on-the-job mentorship, you will receive an annual personal learning budget to attend global tech conferences, undertake AWS/Cloud certifications, and attend internal engineering masterclasses led by our technical leadership team.
