About the Company & Graduate Programme
The BBC is the world’s leading public service broadcaster, driven by a mission to inform, educate, and entertain millions of people across the globe. As a Graduate Software Engineer within our Digital Media and Platform Engineering (DMPE) division, you will find yourself at the very heart of the UK’s most iconic digital transformation efforts. From powering iPlayer’s massive traffic spikes during major live events to innovating in AI-driven personalization and cloud architecture, the BBC provides an unparalleled landscape for early-career technologists to solve problems at a scale that very few private organizations can match.
Our commitment to early careers is built into our DNA. We recognize that the future of public service broadcasting is inherently digital, and we prioritize the professional development of our graduates to ensure they become the architects of tomorrow. By joining this programme, you aren't just an employee; you are a catalyst for innovation within a non-profit environment that values ethical technology, accessibility, and high-impact engineering above all else. This intake is pivotal in ensuring we maintain our technical edge in a competitive global media landscape.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate within multidisciplinary Agile squads to design, build, and maintain high-traffic services, APIs, and front-end interfaces.
- Gain hands-on exposure to cloud-native technologies, primarily using AWS (Amazon Web Services), Kubernetes, and serverless architectures.
- Write clean, testable, and robust code using modern languages such as Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or Go.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including CI/CD pipeline management, automated testing, and site reliability engineering (SRE) practices.
- Engage with senior stakeholders and product owners to translate technical constraints into accessible user experiences.
- Contribute to open-source initiatives and internal engineering guilds aimed at improving our developer productivity and infrastructure resilience.
- Analyze data metrics from our platform to identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimization strategies for real-time video delivery.
Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility
- Candidates holding or predicted to achieve a 2:1 degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or any STEM discipline with a heavy focus on computational logic.
- A deep-seated curiosity for modern web development, backend infrastructure, or cloud-native software principles.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems using algorithmic logic and clear, concise documentation.
- Strong collaborative mindset; we look for individuals who thrive in team environments, offer constructive feedback, and value inclusive design.
- Ability to adapt to new frameworks and technologies rapidly; we value a growth mindset over mastery of a single toolset.
- Full right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme (we provide comprehensive support for successful applicants requiring ongoing visa sponsorship).
- A passion for public service media and a genuine interest in how digital technology can bring people together.
Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship
Our 24-month structured programme is designed to provide you with breadth and depth. You will complete three distinct 8-month rotations across different departments, such as iPlayer, BBC News Digital, or Platform Infrastructure. Each rotation is carefully selected to expose you to different architectural challenges, from high-scale backend API services to complex front-end user experiences, ensuring you gain a comprehensive 360-degree view of how we deliver content to millions of homes.
Support is a cornerstone of our scheme. Every graduate is paired with an experienced senior engineer who acts as a mentor, providing technical guidance and career development coaching. Additionally, you will be assigned a 'buddy' from a previous graduate cohort to help you navigate our company culture. We provide a generous training budget for formal professional qualifications, including AWS Associate certifications, CEng professional registration support, or specific programming language accreditations, ensuring your growth remains accelerated throughout your tenure.
Salary, Bonus & Benefits Package
- Competitive base salary of £36,500 per annum, with reviews based on rotation milestones.
- Annual performance-based bonus scheme linked to individual and departmental contributions.
- Generous pension scheme with the BBC matching contributions up to 10%.
