Join Monzo's 24-month Graduate Engineering programme to build scalable backend systems in a high-impact, fintech-first environment. Gain hands-on experience through three diverse rotations with dedicated mentorship, competitive pay, and equity options.

About the Company & Graduate Programme

Monzo is more than just a bank; we are a technology-first company reimagining the financial landscape from the ground up. Headquartered in London, our influence stretches across the UK fintech sector, serving over seven million customers with intuitive, real-time banking solutions. Our culture is built on radical transparency, psychological safety, and a 'get stuff done' mentality that empowers individuals to challenge the status quo. We operate on a microservices architecture, leveraging cutting-edge cloud-native technologies to ensure our platform is as resilient as it is innovative.

Our Graduate Programme is the lifeblood of our engineering strategy. We don't believe in siloing graduates into repetitive administrative tasks. Instead, we treat our graduates as full-stack engineers from day one. You will be embedded into cross-functional product squads, working alongside senior engineers to ship production code that impacts millions of daily transactions. This intake is pivotal as we scale our global architecture, requiring sharp minds capable of tackling complex distributed systems problems while maintaining our signature user experience.

What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain robust microservices primarily using Go (Golang) within a high-throughput, distributed environment.
  • Collaborate with product managers and designers to transform feature requirements into technical specifications and production-ready code.
  • Participate in full-stack feature delivery, ensuring high availability, performance, and security across all banking services.
  • Engage in rigorous code reviews, pair programming, and architectural design sessions to uphold our engineering standards.
  • Utilize infrastructure-as-code principles and modern cloud tools, including Kubernetes, AWS, and Envoy, to manage service deployments.
  • Contribute to our incident response rotation, learning how to troubleshoot and resolve high-stakes technical outages in real-time.
  • Present your project work and architectural proposals to senior stakeholders and the wider engineering leadership team.

Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related STEM discipline is preferred; we value aptitude over specific language expertise.
  • A minimum of a 2:1 (or equivalent) in your undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
  • Demonstrable passion for backend technologies and an interest in distributed systems or financial technology.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Go, Java, Python, C++).
  • Strong logical reasoning and analytical skills, with a proven ability to break down complex problems into manageable technical chunks.
  • An empathetic team player who thrives in a collaborative, feedback-oriented environment and possesses a curiosity for how systems work.
  • Must hold the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme; we provide visa sponsorship for exceptional candidates who meet our criteria.

Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship

Our 24-month programme is designed to provide breadth and depth. You will complete three 8-month rotations across different engineering domains, such as Financial Crime, Lending, Core Banking, or Platform Infrastructure. Each rotation ensures you gain exposure to different architectural patterns and business challenges, helping you identify your niche as an engineer. You are not a number here; you are an essential contributor to our technical evolution.

Beyond technical on-the-job training, we provide a structured support network. You will be paired with both a 'buddy' (a recent graduate hire) and a senior engineering mentor who will guide your professional development and career progression. We also support external certifications and ongoing learning, providing a generous professional development budget for conferences, courses, and certifications relevant to your role, such as AWS Certified Developer or advanced Distributed Systems training.

Salary, Bonus & Benefits Package

  • Competitive base salary of £38,000 per annum.
  • Annual performance-based bonus scheme aligned with company and individual goals.
  • Generous pension scheme: we match your contributions up to 5%.
  • 25 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays and the option to buy/sell additional days.
  • Comprehensive private healthcare coverage including mental health support and wellbeing allowances.
  • Hybrid working allowance to ensure your home office setup is ergonomic and efficient.
  • Company-wide equity options; become a shareholder and own a piece of the bank you are helping to build.

Recruitment Stages & How to Apply
