About the Company & Graduate Programme
Monzo is revolutionising the way people bank. Since our inception, we have grown to become one of the UK’s most influential digital-first financial institutions, challenging traditional high-street banking with a customer-centric, tech-first approach. We operate a highly resilient microservices architecture built primarily on Go, running on AWS, which allows us to iterate rapidly and provide world-class banking services to millions of customers. Our culture is built on transparency, autonomy, and a relentless commitment to building the best possible financial product.
Our Graduate Engineering Programme is designed to transition high-potential graduates into high-impact software engineers. We recognise that the move from academia to industry is significant; therefore, we provide an environment where you are trusted with real production code from your first week. As a graduate, you will be embedded into cross-functional product squads, working alongside senior engineers to ship features that have a tangible impact on our users' lives, whilst benefiting from a structured path of professional growth and technical mastery.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable microservices using Go, ensuring high availability and performance across our banking infrastructure.
- Collaborate within a cross-functional squad of engineers, product managers, and designers to conceptualise and deliver new banking features.
- Participate in full-lifecycle software development, from initial architecture discussions and code reviews to deployment and monitoring.
- Engage in our on-call rotation programme (supported by senior mentors) to learn how to manage and resolve real-world production incidents.
- Contribute to our internal open-source culture by improving our tooling, testing frameworks, and developer experience.
- Deep-dive into distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and cloud-native security practices in a regulated environment.
- Communicate technical progress and blockers to stakeholders across the business during agile ceremonies and roadmap planning.
Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility
- An academic background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related STEM discipline.
- A minimum of a 2:1 degree (or predicted) from a recognised university.
- A strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Go, Java, Python, or C++) and a keen desire to master new technologies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to articulate complex technical ideas clearly to non-technical team members.
- A genuine passion for financial technology and a desire to build software that makes banking accessible to everyone.
- Right-to-work in the UK for the duration of the programme (we are able to provide visa sponsorship for high-potential candidates who meet specific criteria).
Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship
Our programme is structured over 24 months, featuring two core rotational placements. During your first year, you will join our 'Core Banking' track, focusing on ledger systems and transaction processing. In your second year, you may choose to rotate into specialist areas such as Financial Crime, Lending, or Product Infrastructure. This structure ensures you develop a holistic understanding of how a modern bank operates under the hood, rather than just becoming a specialist in a single technical vertical.
You will be paired with a dedicated 'Buddy' from day one—a former graduate who can help you navigate our culture and internal systems. Additionally, you will be assigned a Senior Engineering Mentor who will facilitate your long-term technical growth. We provide a dedicated professional development budget for certifications, conference attendance (e.g., QCon, AWS Summits), and training materials to ensure you remain at the cutting edge of software engineering.
