About the Company & Graduate Programme
Monzo is on a mission to make money work for everyone. Since our inception, we have redefined the UK banking landscape, moving from a disruptive challenger to a central pillar of the modern financial ecosystem. Our engineering culture is rooted in autonomy, radical transparency, and the use of cutting-edge technology to solve complex regulatory and distributed systems challenges. As a member of our graduate cohort, you will be part of a high-growth environment where your code directly impacts the financial wellbeing of millions of customers.
The Monzo Graduate Backend Engineering programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and high-scale, production-grade engineering. We recognise that the next generation of engineers is the lifeblood of our innovation pipeline. Over the course of the programme, you will contribute to core banking microservices, participate in our incident management rotations, and help us maintain the robust, highly-available infrastructure that our users rely on every single day.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate within cross-functional squads to design, build, and ship scalable microservices using Go and other internal tooling.
- Participate in 'on-call' rotations under the mentorship of senior engineers, learning how to triage, debug, and resolve live production incidents effectively.
- Engage in pair programming sessions and thorough code reviews to ensure our engineering standards remain high and knowledge is shared across the team.
- Contribute to the migration and modernisation of our legacy systems while working on greenfield features that expand our product suite.
- Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers to translate user requirements into technical specifications and elegant, efficient code.
- Engage in internal engineering forums and architecture guild meetings, influencing the technical direction of specific product verticals.
- Develop a deep understanding of our event-driven architecture, focusing on reliability, observability, and data consistency.
- Assist in the automation of deployment pipelines, ensuring that our CI/CD workflows are efficient and secure.
Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility
- An undergraduate or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related STEM discipline.
- Predicted or achieved a 2:1 grade or higher (or equivalent international qualification).
- Strong foundational knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.
- Demonstrable experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Go, Java, Python, C++).
- A proactive, inquisitive mindset—you aren't afraid to ask 'why' and you enjoy solving ambiguous, complex problems.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in diverse teams and provide clear, constructive feedback to peers.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Full right-to-work in the UK (we offer visa sponsorship for exceptional candidates who meet specific requirements).
Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship
Our 24-month programme is structured to give you a comprehensive view of the engineering landscape at Monzo. You will rotate through three distinct engineering areas, such as Payments, Lending, or Platform Infrastructure. Each rotation lasts approximately 8 months, ensuring you have enough time to embed yourself within a team, own meaningful features, and see them through to full production deployment. This rotation model ensures you develop a holistic understanding of our banking stack.
Beyond technical rotations, every graduate is assigned a Senior Engineering Mentor and a dedicated peer 'Buddy.' We provide an annual budget for learning and development, which you can use for industry certifications, cloud computing training (AWS), or attendance at major technical conferences. You will also participate in bespoke soft-skills workshops focused on professional communication, technical leadership, and career planning within a fast-paced scale-up environment.
