Join Monzo's two-year rotational programme as a Backend Software Engineer, where you will build the future of digital banking. You will receive dedicated mentorship, professional development funding, and the opportunity to work at scale with modern technologies like Go and AWS.

About the Company & Graduate Programme

Monzo is not just a bank; it is a technology company redefining the financial landscape in the UK. Since our inception, we have challenged legacy banking norms, placing the customer experience at the heart of everything we do. With millions of users relying on our platform for their daily financial needs, we operate at a scale that demands high-performance, resilient, and secure backend systems. Our culture is built on transparency, radical candour, and an unwavering commitment to constant innovation. We treat our engineers as product owners, empowering them to make impactful decisions from day one.

Our Graduate Programme is designed to identify the next generation of technical leaders. As a Graduate Backend Software Engineer, you will be embedded into cross-functional squads, working alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry. We provide a platform for graduates to move beyond academic theory and tackle real-world challenges, such as scaling our microservices architecture, enhancing our transaction processing speed, and developing novel financial features. This intake is pivotal to our strategic goal of expanding our product suite and maintaining the high availability our users expect.

What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust microservices using Go, our primary language, to ensure seamless banking operations.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary squad of engineers, product managers, and data scientists to deliver new user-facing features.
  • Participate in full-cycle software development: from writing clean, testable code to monitoring performance in production environments.
  • Engage in regular code reviews, offering and receiving constructive feedback to maintain our high engineering standards.
  • Contribute to our cloud-native infrastructure using AWS and Kubernetes, ensuring our services are scalable and secure.
  • Solve complex technical problems, including concurrency challenges and database migrations, to improve system reliability.
  • Work on incident response rotations, gaining deep insight into how a distributed system functions under high load.
  • Contribute to our engineering documentation and knowledge-sharing sessions to support team growth and technical excellence.

Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related STEM discipline; final year students or recent graduates are welcome.
  • A minimum of a 2:1 degree classification (predicted or achieved) from a recognised university.
  • A strong foundation in at least one object-oriented or functional programming language (e.g., Go, Java, Python, C++).
  • A deep curiosity about distributed systems, API design, and cloud architecture, with a drive to learn new technologies rapidly.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to break down complex technical challenges into manageable components.
  • Strong communication skills, with a collaborative mindset and an eagerness to participate in team-based decision-making.
  • A genuine passion for Monzo’s mission to make money work for everyone.
  • Must hold valid right-to-work in the UK; Monzo may support visa sponsorship for exceptional candidates under the Graduate Route or Skilled Worker route.

Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship

Your 24-month journey at Monzo starts with a comprehensive induction covering our engineering culture, security protocols, and Go-specific training. The programme is structured around four distinct six-month rotations, allowing you to gain exposure to different areas of our banking stack, such as Payments, Lending, Core Banking, or Financial Crime. Each rotation is designed to give you significant ownership, moving you from a supportive team member to an autonomous contributor. We believe in learning by doing, so expect to be committing code to production within your first few weeks.

Beyond technical training, we offer structured mentorship and career development. Every graduate is paired with a dedicated 'buddy'—a fellow engineer to help you navigate your first few months—and a senior mentor who provides long-term guidance and career coaching. We also fund professional development initiatives, including certification paths in AWS architecture, participation in major tech conferences, and internal workshops led by our Principal Engineers. By the end of your second year, you will have the technical maturity to step into a permanent, high-impact Engineering role.

Salary, Bonus & Benefits Package

  • Competitive base salary of £40,000 to £45,000 per annum depending on experience and performance.
  • Sign-on bonus and annual discretionary performance-based bonus scheme.
  • Generous pension scheme with employer matching contributions.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus public bank holidays, with an extra day off for your birthday.
  • Private medical insurance and comprehensive wellbeing support, including mental health resources and gym membership subsidies.
  • Hybrid working allowance to support your remote setup and monthly travel stipends for office attendance.
  • Relocation assistance provided for graduates moving to London from other parts of the UK.

Recruitment Stages & How to Apply

  2. Gamified Cognitive & Situational Judgement Tests: A short series of assessments to gauge your problem-solving style and how you handle professional scenarios in a high-pressure environment.
