About the Company & Graduate Programme
Amazon is at the forefront of the global cloud revolution, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) powering the digital infrastructure of countless enterprises, startups, and government entities across the UK. As a Graduate Software Development Engineer in our London hub, you will be joining an environment defined by 'Day 1' philosophy—a relentless commitment to customer obsession, operational excellence, and bold innovation. We believe that graduate talent is the lifeblood of our future, providing fresh perspectives that challenge our status quo and drive the next wave of technological breakthroughs in cloud computing.
Our UK graduate programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and high-scale production engineering. You will be immersed in a culture where you are empowered to own your projects, influence product roadmaps, and contribute code that impacts millions of users worldwide. We don't just hire for roles; we hire for careers, investing heavily in your technical growth through immersive learning experiences and the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest engineering minds in the industry.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior engineers to design, develop, and deploy scalable microservices using Java, Python, or C++.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architectural design, code reviews, and automated testing.
- Engage in root cause analysis for production issues, contributing to the stability and reliability of high-availability cloud services.
- Leverage cloud-native tools and AWS infrastructure services (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB) to solve real-world engineering challenges.
- Partner with cross-functional teams, including product managers and UX designers, to translate customer needs into technical specifications.
- Contribute to the continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to maintain high velocity and quality in our release cycles.
- Participate in agile ceremonies, providing transparent updates to stakeholders and senior leadership on project milestones.
Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility
- Pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related STEM discipline.
- Predicted or achieved minimum 2:1 degree classification (or equivalent).
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, C++, Python, or Ruby.
- A deep curiosity about distributed systems, cloud computing, and large-scale data processing architectures.
- Strong analytical mindset with a proven ability to decompose complex problems into manageable technical tasks.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Right to work in the UK without sponsorship limitations, or eligible for the Graduate Route visa for the duration of the programme.
Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship
Your 24-month journey begins with an intensive boot camp designed to align you with Amazon's core engineering principles and technical standards. Following this, you will rotate through two distinct engineering squads, allowing you to gain breadth of experience across different aspects of our cloud platform, such as networking, storage, compute, or security. Each rotation provides exposure to different technology stacks and product architectures, ensuring you develop a well-rounded skill set that positions you for a successful long-term career in tech.
Support is a cornerstone of our programme. Upon joining, you will be paired with a dedicated 'Buddy'—a peer engineer who helps you navigate your first few months—and a Senior Mentor who provides long-term career guidance and professional development. We support your pursuit of industry-recognised certifications, including AWS Certified Solutions Architect, and offer dedicated time for personal development projects and internal technical training workshops.
