About the Company & Graduate Programme
ARM is the engine behind the world’s most iconic technology brands, with our architecture powering over 250 billion chips globally. From the smartphone in your pocket to the supercomputers driving AI research and the sensors in the Internet of Things, ARM designs the energy-efficient processors that define the modern era. Headquartered in the UK, we pride ourselves on a culture of relentless innovation, collaboration, and a flat-structured environment where even the newest graduate engineer can influence the roadmap of future technology. Our commitment to early careers is woven into our DNA; we believe that fresh perspectives are the lifeblood of our R&D efforts.
This Graduate Hardware Engineering programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and high-impact industrial application. As a graduate, you will be embedded within cross-functional teams, working on critical projects that push the boundaries of performance and power efficiency. You aren't just here to shadow; you are here to contribute. You will be instrumental in delivering the micro-architectural specifications that will be licensed by the world’s largest tech companies, ensuring that your work has a tangible impact on the global digital economy long before you finish your graduate tenure.
What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior architects to design and verify advanced CPU/GPU micro-architectures using Verilog and SystemVerilog.
- Participate in the end-to-end design lifecycle, from initial architectural exploration and RTL coding to formal verification and post-silicon validation.
- Utilise industry-standard CAD tools and simulation environments to analyse power, performance, and area (PPA) trade-offs.
- Engage with global engineering teams across our Cambridge, London, and international offices to align on project milestones.
- Develop high-performance scripts using Python and Tcl to automate testing frameworks and improve workflow efficiency.
- Contribute to technical documentation and internal design reviews, ensuring adherence to rigorous hardware development standards.
- Gain exposure to low-level software stacks and performance modelling to understand how hardware instructions impact application-level performance.
Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility
- You are currently pursuing or have recently completed a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related STEM discipline.
- A minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) is required; candidates with a Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Architecture are highly encouraged to apply.
- Strong fundamental understanding of digital logic design, computer architecture concepts, and Boolean algebra.
- Passion for troubleshooting complex technical problems and a logical, data-driven mindset when approaching hardware bottlenecks.
- Exceptional team-working and communication skills; you must be comfortable explaining complex technical ideas to diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrable experience with programming languages such as C, C++, or Python in an academic or project context.
- Candidates must possess the right to work in the UK. ARM is a certified sponsor and provides visa support for exceptional international graduates.
Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship
Our 24-month programme is structured around four six-month rotations, allowing you to explore different areas of CPU and system-on-chip (SoC) design. You might spend time in Performance Analysis, Front-end Design, Verification, and Physical Implementation. This breadth of experience ensures you gain a holistic understanding of how a processor is built, providing you with a unique vantage point that is rarely found in traditional engineering roles. Throughout this journey, we place immense value on professional development and continuous learning.
Beyond technical rotations, you will be assigned a senior mentor—a technical leader within your chosen department—and a dedicated graduate buddy who has recently completed the scheme. This support network is designed to foster your career growth, assist with soft-skill development, and guide you through the professional registration process. We actively sponsor our graduates to work towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the IET/BCS, providing study materials, exam support, and access to internal technical conferences to keep you at the cutting edge of industry standards.
