Join BAE Systems on a 24-month Graduate Systems Engineering scheme in London, where you will rotate across critical defence projects. This programme offers full CEng chartership support, a competitive salary, and the opportunity to build a career at the forefront of national security innovation.

About the Company & Graduate Programme

BAE Systems is a global leader in the defence, aerospace, and security sectors, providing some of the world's most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace, and security solutions. In the UK, we sit at the heart of the national security architecture, partnering with government agencies to deliver mission-critical systems that protect people and national interests. Our commitment to innovation is unwavering, and we recognise that the next generation of engineers, data scientists, and strategists are fundamental to maintaining our competitive edge in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The Graduate Systems Engineer programme is a pivotal career gateway designed to transition high-potential talent into the heart of our technical operations. As a graduate, you will be embedded within cross-functional teams tasked with designing, integrating, and maintaining complex systems. This intake is critical to our long-term strategy of digital transformation, sustainability in engineering, and the seamless integration of AI into defence infrastructure. You will be joining an organisation that values your curiosity, initiative, and drive to deliver excellence in high-stakes environments.

What You'll Do & Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in end-to-end systems lifecycle management, from initial concept and design through to verification, validation, and in-service support.
  • Collaborate with senior engineering teams to translate complex user requirements into actionable technical specifications using SysML and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools.
  • Engage in cross-departmental rotations, gaining exposure to hardware integration, software architecture, and cybersecurity protocols within the defence sector.
  • Utilise modern data analysis tools and simulation software to model system performance under rigorous stress-test conditions.
  • Present technical findings and project status updates to senior stakeholders and project leads, ensuring transparency and alignment with project milestones.
  • Assist in conducting safety assessments and risk analysis, ensuring all developed solutions comply with strict UK defence and international safety standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal engineering workflows, identifying bottlenecks and proposing innovative, technology-driven solutions.

Who We Are Looking For & Candidate Eligibility

  • A minimum 2:1 degree (predicted or obtained) in a STEM-based discipline, such as Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • A demonstrable analytical mindset with the ability to break down complex, abstract problems into manageable technical components.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, essential for working effectively within diverse, multidisciplinary project teams.
  • A keen interest in the defence and security industry, with a drive to contribute to projects that have a tangible impact on national security.
  • Proactive approach to learning new software packages, programming languages, and technical frameworks as required by project demands.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK and meet the baseline security vetting requirements for the defence industry (National Security Vetting).
  • Flexibility and resilience in the face of shifting project priorities and a fast-paced working environment.

Graduate Training, Rotations & Mentorship

The 24-month programme is structured to provide a comprehensive view of our business. You will undertake three 8-month rotations across different departments, allowing you to gain breadth in your technical understanding and depth in specific niche engineering domains. From systems architecture to supply chain logistics and digital integration, each placement is designed to challenge your technical acumen and leadership potential.

Beyond technical delivery, we are deeply invested in your personal and professional development. Every graduate is paired with a dedicated buddy from a recent cohort and a senior mentor who provides guidance on career trajectory and technical growth. We actively support your journey towards formal professional accreditation, including CEng (Chartered Engineer) status with the IET or IMechE, with fully funded training modules, professional membership fees, and time allocated for study and development activities.

Salary, Bonus & Benefits Package

  • Competitive base salary of £36,000 – £38,500 per annum, reviewable at completion of the programme.
  • Joining bonus of £2,000 paid upon successful induction.
  • Generous company pension scheme with an employer match of up to 10%.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus 8 bank holidays and the option to purchase additional leave.
  • Comprehensive private healthcare coverage including dental and optical options.
  • Hybrid working allowance to support a productive and flexible work-from-home environment.
